Welcome to Ham Radio !

Dayton Hamvention Time !

(May 12, 2012) ---  May brings with it the beginning of Spring and most importantly the annual trek to the Mighty Mecca of Ham Radio, Dayton Hamvention. Celebrating it’s 61th show this year on May 18, 19 and 20, this is one hamfest everyone should visit at least once. This year’s theme is "Internationally Connected", selected to emphasize how Amateur Radio ties together radio operator’s from all over the world.

Additionally 2012 brings back the now standard ARRL EXPO which is a showcase of exhibits to enhance your ham radio experience, this is going to be yet another great ham radio event. In addition the ARRL will have several new presentations on their DIY Stage. Expect a variety of creative projects and cool technology to be demonstrated that will interest both novice and seasoned operators alike.

So what exactly is Hamvention ? It’s a forum where you can meet the authorities on nearly all facets of our great hobby. It’s 500 inside exhibit spaces where manufacturers show off their latest equipment that you can see & touch. Some is even operational and you can "fiddle the knobs" on some really expensive radio gear. It’s also 2,500 outdoor flea market spaces where everything and anything is available for sale. Last years attendance rebounded slightly and all indications are that this year's event will again increase. Let's hope this is true.

Another fun repeat feature this year at Hamvention will be streaming audio and video from the event via Tom, WA5KUB who will provide live video from Hamvention. If you can’t make it to this years event check out the next best thing at http://wa5kub.com. Tom has posted a special announcement on his website this year indicating this may be the last broadcast unless some additional funding becomes available. This is always a great way to see what's going on at Hamvention and I hope he will be able to continue this now great tradition. Stop by his flea market spaces and donate if you can.

If you are looking for alternative transportation to Hamvention, the Pioneer Amateur Radio Fellowship group is once again sponsoring a charter bus to Dayton on Saturday, May 19th provided they get enough riders. The deadline will have passed by the time you read this but they may still have some open seats left. Complete details and costs are on their website at www.qsl.net/w8ctt. The basic Dayton Hamvention website is www.Hamvention.org.

For those of you interested in ARES, their forum is always well attended and is scheduled for Hamvention Room 3 at 2:30 PM Saturday. The agenda is still being set but always expect some interesting news on the status of ARES here in Ohio and around the country. The Hamvention Forum listing states that Ohio OES Jack Sovik, KB8WPZ will be the moderator but expect our SEC Matt Welsh, W8DEC to have some comments if they can pry him away from his day job at the Amateur Electronics Supply booth !

Ohio House Bill 158 Passes Senate

(Apr 27, 2012) --  Ohio amateurs  antenna legislation cleared a major hurdle today when H.B. 158 was approved by the Ohio Senate.  The Bill has now passed, though with minor differences, in both the Ohio House and the Ohio Senate and our ultimate goal of having this legislation become law appears to be within reach.  The two remaining steps are, first, consideration by the House of the amendments made by the Senate.  Those amendments essentially deleted the 75   presumption  of reasonableness for tower height.  The standard under the bill as passed is similar to that required by FCC regulation PRB-1, which is  reasonable accommodation  and  minimum practicable  regulation of antennas.  Unlike PRB-1, however, the Ohio legislation places the burden of proof on any legislative authority denying a request for zoning variance to demonstrate compliance with the Ohio statute.

We believe that the House will be supportive of the changes made by the Senate, as both of the primary sponsors, Representatives Stebelton and Okey,  have indicated their support and members often defer to the Sponsors when differences such as these arise. Following House reconsideration the next stop is Governor Kasich, who must approve the legislation in order for it to become law.  Even that approval does not instantly transform the Bill into law, as a 90 day waiting period will be required before the law goes into effect.   Notwithstanding all of that, today s vote was a milestone in our nearly 5 year effort to secure passage of this legislation. We continue to believe that this legislation will make it easier for many Ohio amateurs to more fully enjoy their hobby as well as to prepare for and participate in emergency communications as the need arises.

MARC Assists With MS Walk

(April 28, 2012) -- Saturday, April 28th marked the official opening of the 2012 public service season as members of the MARC again assisted with the annual Spring MS Walk in Massillon at the Massillon Recreation Center.

Sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society communications volunteers staffed rest stops and provided safety and support communications for this years event. Communications was also maintained between the transfer busses and the Recreation Center.

EComm 1, the clubs Emergency Communications Trailer was stationed at the Rec Center and provided Net Control operations for the Walk. A cold day did not deter the nearly 400 participants this year. Local MS Walk Coordinator Dick Kulick expressed his sincere appreciation to all of the amateur volunteers for their continued assistance year after year. The overall event went very well with only a few needing transport back to the Recreation Center.

The following volunteers assisted with this years MS Walk. Terry Russ - N8ATZ, Jim Farriss - WA8GXM, Don Finley - W8DEF, Jeff Gortney - KC8CFM, Sam Swisher - N2TJX, Wade Huthmacher - WD8MIU, Mike Palmer - KD8ENV, Don Wade - W8DEA, Ted Armstrong - K8TWA, Dan Anastis - N8DZM and Russ McMahen - N8PII. Future ham Dan Fouts also provided support. This event provided 44 Community Service Hours.

2012 Continues to Show Growth in Amateur Radio Licensing
Courtesy of the ARRL

(Apr 15, 2012) --    The first quarter of 2012 (January-March) saw a high level of Amateur Radio license exam sessions, producing an elevated influx of applications for new licensees. According to ARRL VEC Manager Maria Somma, AB1FM, these numbers outpaced the 2011 first quarter results by 30 percent. This uptick does not only apply to new applications; there was a 6 percent increase in the number of upgrades, too. “Statistics over the last 13 years reveal that these are the highest numbers that we’ve ever seen for the total number of US amateurs,” Somma said. “Now there are more than 704,000 radio amateurs in the US.”

Somma said that there are currently 704,236 licensed Amateur Radio operators in the US. “We broke the 700,000 barrier in October 2011,” she explained, “and the numbers continue to progress higher. Broken down by license class, at the end of March there were 14,352 Novices, 343,597 Technicians, 161,220 Generals, 57,393 Advanced and 127,674 Amateur Extra licensees. It’s an all-time high for Technician, General and Extra class licensees, as well. Additionally, our total number of licensees across all three classes has grown each year.”

For the first quarter of 2012, Somma said that the ARRL VEC test session statistics are the highest first quarter results since the FCC’s restructuring of the license requirements in 2007: “Our exam session activity and exam elements administered are elevated. As the total number of licensees across all three license classes continues to grow each year, the demand for Amateur Radio exam sessions also grows. In turn, the number of amateurs who want to be Volunteer Examiners and who want to teach Amateur Radio classes is also rising. The ARRL VEC has seen a spike in the number of applications from General and Extra class radio amateurs who want to give back to their community by serving as examiners and instructors. This is a positive trend that we expect will continue over the coming months.”

(Mar 25, 2012) -- The MARC Club Roster for 2012 has been completed and has been posted on the club website. We now stand at 81 total members with 22 listed as Life Members.

While every effort has been made to update everyone's address and email, mishaps do happen. If we have mis-typed your information, please notify us to have it corrected. Contact Terry Russ, N8ATZ at truss@sssnet.com with any corrections.

MARC Hamfest ARRL Approved

(Feb 15, 2012) -- The club hamfest has again received ARRL Sponsorship thanks to approval by Great Lakes Director Jim Weaver, K8JE. Sponsorship includes listing of our event in QST Magazine and the League will provide several gift certificates to offer as door prizes.

Hamfest flyers have also been printed and are already being distributed at local hamfests. If you will be attending any upcoming hamfest, we would appreciate it if you would take some flyers to distribute for us. Most all hamfests have a table by the ticket drum where flyers can be placed.

We have already received inquires about our hamfest this year, several table vendors already have reserved their spots from last year which is a good sign. Again we hope to have Radio Sales & Service out of Ashland, Ohio. They are currently a distributor of the new Wouxun handheld radios. They were on display at the Mansfield Hamfest at a very attractive price and were sold out before the end of the day. We will look forward to having them join us again this year.

Annual Club Banquet Report

(Feb 9, 2012) -- The MARC held their annual Awards Banquet at the Hometown Buffet on Saturday, January 14th with about 30 members and guests attending.

We enjoyed a great dinner followed by the presentation of our annual awards. Expect a full report at the club meeting.  Some photos from the banquet are also currently posted on the club's Facebook page. A complete report including pictures of the award recipients is now available on our Banquet Page. Click Here to read all about it !.

MARC Fundraiser at Buehler's

(Oct 16, 2011) -- The MARC participated is a community fund raiser sponsored by Buehler's Grocery Store in Jackson Township on Saturday, October 15th.

This event involved the club staffing an outdoor grill selling hotdogs and drinks over a six hour period. Even though the weather was cold and windy, we were pretty busy throughout the day.

The club's Emergency Communications Trailer was on display to the public with an operating station that drew a few curious shoppers who stopped by for a look. Although sales were only moderate, it was a great public relations display for the club. We have already talked to the folks at Buehler's about participating in this event next summer when the weather should be a lot warmer !

Special thanks to the following club members who participated in this community event.

They were, Wade - WD8MIU; Terry - N8ATZ; Jim - WA8GXM; Perry - W8AU; Don - W8DEF; Don Wade - W8DEA; Steve - KD8ACF; Ralph - K8HSQ; Tom - KC8QOD; Mike - WA8MKH; and Pat - KA8DAL.

Just exactly when do I have to ID my station ?

Q & A on Station Identification.

Q.  Do I have to give my call sign at the beginning of a contact ?

A.  You only have to ID at the end of the QSO and at least once every 10 minutes during it's course as per Article 97.119(a). There is no requirement to transmit your call at the beginning of a contact but it is customary when calling another station to give your call as part of the exchange so the other station knows who is calling him !

Q.  How often do I have to give the call sign of the station I'm talking to ?

A.  You are not legally required to mention the other amateur's call at all per Article 97.119(a). The only exception is when handling traffic with foreign stations - you must then give the other station's call sign at the end of an exchange of third party traffic per Article 97.115(c).
